When I think of traditional southern homes, I imagine soaring ceilings and big beams, wood floors and pretty cabinetry, brick accents, and big windows with lots of natural light. And a cat. When I first stepped in to this beautiful home in Tennyson Oaks, one of Alexandria's most sought-after neighborhoods, it gave me those old southern vibes, but the energy wasn't quite right yet. The house felt dark and the spaces felt separated. But I could see the potential and I knew this would be one of my favorite projects to date, not just because of the transformation that I knew would be drastic, but because the home just had a good feeling to it that I knew would only get better. We worked with Crain-Ponthieux Remodeling to bring this one to her full glory. Here are a few befores:
The bricks and the dark wood and the dated tile and the blue paint made the home feel outdated and heavy. The homeowners expressed the need to open up the brick wall to create a seamless transition between the kitchen and living area and they wanted light and bright and modern updates throughout. They had their new floor picked out, but needed direction for everything else. I was happy to oblige.
When you walk into the home, there is a small entryway, which I wanted to make a statement. Green accents and an amazing piece of artwork paired with the homeowner's existing table scream southern and fabulous!
The next space you see as you look to the left is the dining room. We didn't do much in here as the homeowner's existing furniture and lighting worked well. We did change the paint color to the same warm white you see throughout all the spaces. We also added new linen drapes and a gallery wall of family photos.
Straight ahead is the living room. The built-in cabinetry got a fresh coat of paint and new hardware and the fireplace got a facelift. New decor, drapes, and an oversized sectional round out the updates in this cozy and crisp space.
Next is the crowning jewel of this dream project: the kitchen! Here are just a few of the many things I love about this space:
cabinets to the ceiling
the gold hardware
beautiful new paint colors
my favorite countertops in the whole entire world!!!!!
a farm sink to die for
the timeless backsplash
I'm having trouble finding the words to describe how much I love this space, so let's just say I am in love and let the photos speak for themselves. Enjoy.
I'm still drooling over it.
Even the neighboring pantry is a showstopper:
Also neighboring the kitchen is a breakfast nook and seating area. We added new windows and custom banquette seating with decadent velvet fabric and a cute new table to the breakfast nook and the seating area fireplace got a facelift to match the living room's and some lovely artwork to round out the space.
Every tradesman on this project was a master at their craft, the homeowners were the kindest and sweetest, and the house had such great bones. All of that combined to make it an absolute dream to work on and the result is a true southern beauty who is now living up to her full potential.
