A Fresh Perspective

Sometimes clients are pleased with most of their home and just need a few tweaks; others crave full-gut jobs. And sometimes it's somewhere in the middle. This project fits into the latter category in that the homeowner was pleased with half of her kitchen, her dining room, and her fireplace. Her big asks were a new kitchen island, removing a small room off the foyer to expand the living room, and new floors and paint. While it can be fun to start over completely, I always welcome and enjoy the challenge of working the new in with the old. Here's where we started:

The chunky furniture, tile floors, and dual-level island dated the space and the living room was cramped. The colors weren't terrible but we needed to use them in a more modern way. We set out to develop a design plan that did just that! The result is a tuscan-inspired, open-plan living space that works better for these recent empty nesters' new lifestyle.

In the living room, I knew I wanted to pair rich hues with light and bright ones. Pattern comes in through the rug, which grounds the space, and the throw pillows. I love the traditional texture of the big, middle ottoman and how it is juxtaposed with sleek, black legs. The rich navy recliner ties into the brown leather chairs in the next space and is a welcome replacement for the bulky recliners that were. I love the linen texture of the Pottery Barn couch paired with the playful Woven Nook throw pillows. The built-in entertainment center anchors the space and the fireplace has a new life surrounded by modern Tuscan accessories and a beautiful window-pane, arched mirror.

The neighboring bar area, which is new to the main part of the home, offers a more masculine aesthetic to the space. I love a good chair circle moment; paired with a new built-in bar, it gives the space its own identity, while still feeling cohesive with the rest of the design. The only thing we added to the nearby dining room was a brick and stone border that ties in beautifully to the fireplace in the living room.

In the kitchen, the client wanted to keep her perimeter the same but change out the island and countertops. The countertops make the space. They are so timeless and bring so much warmth. I suggested taking them up the wall as a backsplash and I am so glad my clients agreed. New barstools add character and charm.

In the neighboring breakfast nook, we added built in storage with a custom cushion and more Woven Nook pillows. The table and chairs add style and much more seating than the previous design offered. The product is the coziest little spot for coffee or a cocktail.

.

I loved every moment of this project. The homeowners and their sweet pups were always a joy to be around and to see the spaced transformed into something so modern and beautiful is beyond satisfying. It's a fresh perspective that will last for decades to come!
